14 Reasons Luke Danes Was The Most Romantic Guy On TV

By Sarah Hearon on September 21, 2014

Stars Hollow is coming to a computer near you. Starting October 1st, Gilmore Girls is going to be available on Netflix, and the world should prepare to re-fall in love with mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. While I’m excited to re-watch the show for many reasons, one of the biggest is to see Lorelai’s relationship with Luke Danes go from friendship to romance. It’s easy to remember Luke as the tough, unemotional diner owner, but when you look back at the series, Luke was actually one of the most romantic male leads in TV history. He proved it’s the little things in life that matter, and sometimes all you need to do to win the girl is throw an extra cup of coffee her way.

1. He made her a Santa Burger: When Lorelai came into the diner bummed about being uninvited to her parents’ holiday party, Luke decided to cheer her up by turning her burger into a Santa Claus.

2. He taught her how to fish: Despite always having feelings for Lorelai, Luke helped her with her other relationships on many different occasions. When she was invited to go fishing with a new boyfriend and planned on learning how to fish through a book, Luke took over and showed her the ropes.

3. He built her an ice rink: When snow-obsessed Lorelai decided to “break-up with snow” after her car was stuck in her driveway, Luke helped her fall in love with winter again and built an ice rink in her front yard.

4. He kept Rory’s mattress: Luke helped Lorelai move her daughter Rory into her college dorm room, and kept the gross Yale mattress that Lorelai was supposed to make plans to store elsewhere. While this might seem like a simple favor, it represents the way Luke was always there for Lorelai and Rory, especially when Rory’s father wasn’t.

5. He re-built her car: After their nasty break-up, Lorelai turned to Luke to help her buy a new car. After shopping for hours, she decided she couldn’t pick a new car and would only settle for her Jeep. Luke went online and spent hours finding all of the parts to make her Jeep work again.

6. He drove her to the hospital: When Lorelai got a call that her dad was in the hospital, Luke closed his diner immediately and drove her to the hospital. He also stayed and made sure she was OK.

7. He watched her favorite movies: To say Luke and Lorelai have different tastes would be an understatement, but that didn’t stop him from filling in for Rory during movie night and watching Lorelai’s favorite, Casablanca.

8. He worried about her health:  Even though caffeine-loving Lorelai always won when Luke tried to give her decaf coffee or tea, he still tried to help her live a healthier life. Nothing says romantic like a man who wants you to live longer.

9. He ran Emily’s errands: Even after Lorelai decided to be with Christopher after she had a fight with Luke, he still showed up at the hospital when Lorelai’s dad had another heart attack. He brought her and her family plenty of food, and also helped Lorelai’s difficult mom, Emily, with her never-ending list of errands.

10. He built her a Chuppah: When Lorelai was engaged to marry Max, Luke built her a chuppah to show her he supported her.

11. He answered her message:  While most ex-boyfriends would ignore their ex-girlfriends voice-mails, when Luke heard Lorelai’s hysterical “can you please come over” message, he rushed to her house to make sure she was OK, and even tried to break in when she didn’t answer the door.

12. He gave her a loan: To help Lorelai fulfill her dream of opening her own inn, Luke loaned her the money to finish the construction. He never pressured her to pay him back, and was always supportive of her business.

13. He kept the horoscope: The first time Luke and Lorelai met, which happened before the series started, Lorelai gave Luke a horoscope. He kept it in his wallet for the next seven years, and showed it to her on their first official date. Swoon.

14. He threw Rory’s going away party: When Rory got a last-minute job opportunity in the show’s series finale, she didn’t think she was going to have enough time to say goodbye to everyone in Stars Hollow. Luke decided to put together a last-minute town meeting, and threw a surprise party for Rory in the town square. When the weather forecast said it was going to rain, he stayed up all night sewing tents and tarps together to make a giant tent for the party. This gesture brought Luke and Lorelai back together (for good) after a season-long separation.
